Richard Strauss was 81 years old when he wrote his Metamorphosen as a reactoin on the bombing of Dresden in 1945. It was his answer on the tragic state of the German cultural life after twelfe years of Nazi regime. The main theme is based on Beethovens Eroica. The original version was for 23 string players and he also made a version for string septet, which will be performed tonight. When the piece premiered it was instantly regognized as a masterpiece.
In 1899 Schönberg's route with his Verklärte Nacht was the other way around: he composed it originally for a string sextet and made a version for string orchestra later. The reception by the audience was initially very negative in 1902. Only until later it was regonized as a great masterpiece. It indicated the direction Schönberg was going with his future compositions.
